Community Land Trusts featured in Greater Boston Housing Report Card 2023

The annual Greater Boston Housing Report Card, most recently released in November 2023, featured a special chapter focusing on community land trusts. I had the honor of leading a team that included Tufts UEP graduate students Chelsey Gao and Johnny Shively to draft that chapter. Check out the 2023 Greater Boston Housing Report Card here. Our chapter on CLTs can be downloaded here. Thanks to the Greater Boston Community Land Trust Network for collaborating on this chapter.

As described on the 2023 Housing Report Card website: In this year’s special topic, researchers Penn Loh, Chelsey Gao and Johnny Shively of the Dept. of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning at Tufts University take a closer look at one possible way to address our housing challenges – community land trusts. CLTs create a hybrid community ownership model that shows promise for providing and protecting affordable housing – but it will take significant effort to make them more prevalent.

Below is an original graphic from the report (created by Gao and Shively) showing the extent of community land trusts across the Greater Boston region:
